Advances in electrical and cooling, with excellence in safety

Progress at Metro keeps on rolling; we’re happy to report that our extended team is nearing a record 100 days with an excellent safety record and no accidents on the job. In the past couple of weeks, great steps forward are being made in both the electrical and the cooling systems.

Electrically speaking, the last week has seen progress on the southern generator “farm;” an area that houses the bulk of the back-up units for the new pods. Footings and rebar have been installed to create a “pad” for some of the cooling system air handlers. The Feeders for the power density units, the cooling towers, and the generator farm were all installed as well, as were parallel switching gear and UPS modules. Some basic lighting elements were also added in both pods. These key elements are a big piece of what keeps customer data reliably available and resilient, and installation has been going without a hitch so far.

More progress has also been made on the cooling system which, like many computer room air conditioning (also known as CRAC) systems, uses chilled water underneath the floor to help cool the spaces above it. The Metro chilled water system has now been extended to the UPS room on the lower level of Metro to help cool backup systems, and two new overall CRAC systems have been added to support one of the two new pods. Insulation of the system installed to support the second pod also occurred this week. Our team also began to flush the new portions of the system in preparation to tie them into the main cooling system.

In the coming weeks, we are looking forward to additional work on our loading docks and roofing for the new pods, as well as continued work on the electrical and cooling systems. We look forward to telling you more about it!

Until then …
